PGC MSF brings REGION XII into the WORLD of OMICS
The PGC MSF Region-Wide Caravan: Forum on Bringing Cutting-Edge Research to Mindanao has successfully premiered in Region XII at the Regional Science Research Center in Mindanao State University, General Santos City, Philippines. It was participated by representatives from different SUCs, HEIs, sectors and agencies in the entire region.
The program started with the opening remarks of the host institution through Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of MSU Gensan, Dr. Jaime Namocatcat. In his speech, Dean Namocatcat praised the efforts of PGC MSF in initiating a caravan to increase awareness in omics research to the community,
An introduction to PGC MSF was given by Program Director Dr.Lyre Murao, who presented the overview of PGC MSF, its vision-mission and objectives, divisions/teams, and exisiting and future facilities. It was followed by a presentation by one of the project staff of PGC MSF, Dr. Joel Hassan Tolentino, who discussed about Molecular Biology to Omics Application. Dr. Tolentino showcased some of the major equipment used in genomics and published papers on omics by some of the renowed Filipino scientists. He stressed that studies on proteomics and metabolomics are very few, hence, encouraged the participants to engage in such studies since services and facilities will be now made available through PGC MSF. These were the highlights from the first part of the program.
The program continued after a breathtaking Maguindanao traditional dance by The Kabpapagariya Ensemble of MSU Gensan, composed of MSU Gensan students. It was followed by presentations from each division/team in PGC MSF: Research and Development, Bioinformatics, Diagnostic and Laboratory Services and Science Education Training. Started off was Research and Development by Dr. Aleyla De Cadiz who shared some of the activities organized by PGC MSF and trainings participated by PGC MSF Staff. Dr. DeCadiz has also emphasized that activities will utlimately aid PGC MSF in realizing its goals to capacitate the scientific workforce of Mindanao and facilitate genomics research programs in Mindanao.

While the Bioinformatics Team of PGC MSF was presented by Dr. Ritchie Mae Gamot who discussed the principles of bioinformatics and its importance in doing omics research. She expressed bioinformatics as the maximization of advancements in computational power and technologies which would lead to more efficient processing of very large data sets such as in omics. She also presented examples on the various applications of bioinformatics such as specific genetic markers that can identify individuals or species can be easily identified in a DNA sequence thru bioinformatics; and genetic variations, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms, can be easily identified using bioinformatics tools.
Asst. Professor Rovi Gem Villame has led the Diagnostics and Laboratory Services of PGC MSF. In her presentation, she showcased the services and facility of PGC MSF ready to offer to the public such as sample preparation, spectrophotometry, fluorometry, electrophoresis, flow cytometry, equipment rental, facility rental, and trainings.
Down to the last presenter was the the Science Education and Training Team led by Asst. Professor Cyrose Suzie Millado, who presented the various activities by PGC MSF both for students and teachers to participate. Some of the major on the line are the Molecular Biology Camp, internship programs for undergraduate and graduate students, and the specialized skills trainings. She ended the presnetation by showing a glimpse of what future participants can expect from the activities through pictures and exciting series of activities during the Pilot MolBio Camp for Teachers last May 2019, held in UP Mindanao.
Each team has prepared trivias thrown after their presentations. With PGC MSF customized ID Sling as prize, audience were very engaged and eagered to partipate.
The gripping exploration into the world of omics was concluded by the awarding of certificates for the resource speakers as well as for MSU-Gensan as the host institution. Dr. Lyre Murao gave her closing remarks by acknowledging tthe guests and participants for their effort to come, bringing an overwhelming fire and exuberance during the event.
The Caravan ended with a breakout session in the afternoon to discuss queries from participants regarding future research collaborations and the services offered by PGC MSF.

Philippine Genome Mindanao Facility holds training for high school teachers
Teachers from twelve senior high schools in Davao City were trained in the “Molecular Biology Camp for Teachers and Students: Hands-on Training on Techniques in Molecular Biology” at the University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao on 14-18 May 2019. The training was organized by the Philippine Genome Center-Mindanao Satellite Facility (PGC-MSF) Science Education and Training Division.
It aimed to introduce the PGC-MSF to the high school community in Davao City, to promote an active research spirit and encourage collaborative research and extension programs, and to develop future molecular biologists.
It aimed to introduce the PGC-MSF to the high school community in Davao City, to promote an active research spirit and encourage collaborative research and extension programs, and to develop future molecular biologists.
The training covered concepts of molecular biology and tools in molecular biology research. The lectures were on basic skills and computations in molecular biology and bioinformatics. The hands-on training were in DNA extraction from fish tissue, primer design, polymerase chain reaction, agarose gel electrophoresis, and gel extraction.
A lecture showed the applications of molecular biology to detect, diagnose, and monitor diseases in health, detect risks and food-borne pathogens in food, diagnose crop or livestock disease in agriculture, and applications in biodiversity and personalized medical treatment. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was introduced as the simplest and most indispensable technique for various applications in environmental microbiology, genetic research, phylogenetics, food and agriculture, medicine, and forensic science.
PGC-MSF project leader Prof. Lyre Anni Murao said “I’d like to emphasize that PGC is not restricted to UP. Though we are part of the PGC in UP Diliman, our mandate is to spread omics research throughout Mindanao starting with teachers. We hope you found it interesting and fun to learn and enjoy. We will have more trainings in the future for other teachers. Our next training batch will be with students. We hope you can influence your students of the exciting and interesting things in molecular biology and omics.”
Speaking on behalf of his fellow trainees, Mr. Sherwin Fortugaliza of Davao City National High School said, “We’ll give our sincere effort to exert our energies to encourage our students to know more of molecular biology as a significant and promising field. With the challenges the Department of Education family is facing towards training in the sciences, we will look for ways and exert efforts to encourage our learners to go into the field of molecular sciences.
The other schools who were represented in the training through their teachers were Sirib National High School, Tacunan NHS, Mintal Comprehensive NHS, Catalunan Pequeño NHS, Crossing Bayabas NHS, Panabo NHS, Daniel R. Aguinaldo NHS, Tagakpan NHS, Doña Carmen Denia NHS, Phil. College of Technology, and Ateneo de Davao University.
